How to use FrameAuth for gated content

From a Simple Framer Site to a Full Membership Platform

If you've ever wanted to put content behind a login, sell access to a course, or launch a paid newsletter in Framer, FrameAuth is the tool that makes it happen. No code required, no complex backend to manage, no third-party platforms to learn.

I recently built Artikle, a premium membership publication template powered by FrameAuth V2, so everything in this article comes from real, hands-on experience with the platform. I'll walk you through how it works, what's new in V2, and how to think about structuring your own gated content.

What Is FrameAuth?

FrameAuth (formerly FramerAuth) is the number one authentication and membership platform built specifically for Framer. It's not a generic auth tool adapted for Framer, it was designed from the ground up to work with Framer's visual editor, drag-and-drop components, and CMS.

With FrameAuth you can:

  • Lock entire pages so only logged-in members can access them

  • Gate individual content sections within a page, show a teaser to everyone, reveal the full content to members

  • Accept payments via Stripe or Lemon Squeezy

  • Manage members, subscriptions, and access tiers from a clean dashboard

  • Add sign-in, sign-up, OTP login, Google and GitHub sign-in, password reset, and profile pages, all designed in Framer, all matching your brand

The setup takes less than 10 minutes and the whole system is copy, paste, and publish, no developer needed.

FrameAuth V2: What Just Changed

V2 launched on June 1, 2026, and it's a complete rebuild, not an update. The team started from scratch after two years of running V1, and the result is a significantly more powerful platform. Here's what's new:

Stripe is finally here.

The most-requested feature for years. You can now sell access to your content through Stripe with free tiers, one-time purchases, or recurring subscriptions. Lemon Squeezy is still fully supported too, and a universal payment adapter is already in place for Polar, Whop, and other payment providers coming soon.

Tags replace license keys.

This is the biggest change in V2 and the one that makes the most difference in practice. Instead of license keys, you now create Tags, simple labels like "member", "pro", or "basic", and assign each tag to the pages it can unlock. Tags are automatically applied when someone buys a product and removed when they cancel. Clean, logical, and far more flexible than the old system.

Multi-product support.

Sell multiple products, bundles, and tiers simultaneously. Customers can purchase, upgrade, downgrade, and manage their accounts without any friction.

Google and GitHub login.

Users can sign in with one click via Google or GitHub, with more providers coming. Fewer passwords means more sign-ups.

OTP (passwordless) login.

Users enter their email and receive a 6-digit code to sign in, no password at all. This eliminates forgotten-password friction entirely, which is a bigger deal than it sounds for conversion.

Custom fields.

Collect any extra information at sign-up, usernames, birthdays, business names, roles, preferences. All configurable from the dashboard.

Webhooks and API.

Real-time syncing with email platforms, CRMs, and automation tools. Connect FrameAuth to Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Zapier, or Make when someone signs up or cancels.

Built-in analytics.

See signups, purchases, subscriptions, and revenue directly in your FrameAuth dashboard.

Multi-project support.

Manage multiple FrameAuth projects under one account, great for agencies building membership sites for clients.

How Artikle Uses FrameAuth V2

Artikle is a premium Framer membership publication template, an editorial site where some articles are free and others require a paid subscription. Think of it as a polished, design-forward version of what Substack does, built entirely in Framer.

Here's how FrameAuth V2 powers it:

The homepage shows articles across categories, News & Analysis, Science & Technology, Sports, Lifestyle, Culture & Arts. Each article card shows a "Members Only" label when the article is gated. Free users can browse and read the preview; members get the full story.

The article page uses a teaser model, the headline, author, and opening section are visible to everyone. Midway through, members-only content kicks in. Non-members see a clean upgrade section with pricing and a subscribe CTA. Members see the full article uninterrupted. This approach converts significantly better than a hard paywall because readers understand the value before committing.

The authentication flow includes dedicated pages for sign-in (email/password and OTP), sign-up, forgot password, reset password, and a full account page, all fully designed and customisable within Framer, matching the editorial aesthetic of the publication.

Bookmarking is built in, members can save articles to read later, accessible from a dedicated bookmarks page. This is handled entirely by FrameAuth without any extra setup.

The whole system, authentication, gating, payments, bookmarks, runs through FrameAuth V2 with no custom backend, no code, and no third-party integrations beyond Stripe.

Setting Up FrameAuth V2: The Simple Version

The full setup guide is on FrameAuth's website → and it's genuinely thorough. Here's the plain-English overview of what the process looks like:

1. Create your FrameAuth account.

Go to frameauth.com and sign up. There's a 14-day free trial with no card required. Create a new project for your site.

2. Install the plugin in Framer

In Framer, go to Assets → Plugins → search FrameAuth → install. Once installed, click Add Snippet and FrameAuth automatically adds the required script to your site settings. One click, nothing to configure manually.

3. Add FrameAuth components to your auth pages.

The plugin gives you pre-built Framer components for sign-in, sign-up, OTP login, forgot password, reset password, and profile. Drag them onto your pages and style them to match your brand in Framer's right panel. They're normal Framer layers, fonts, colors, spacing, all yours to control.

4. Apply overrides to show or hide content based on membership.

This is where the gating happens. Select any element in Framer, go to the Override section in the right panel, and apply a FrameAuth override, ShowIfSignedIn, ShowIfWithTag, ShowIfWithoutTag, and others. No code, just a dropdown selection. This is what creates the teaser model in Artikle, the paywall section and the full content section each have different overrides applied.

5. Create your products and connect Stripe.

In your FrameAuth dashboard, connect your Stripe account, then create your products — free, one-time, or subscription. Set which Tag gets assigned automatically on purchase and removed on cancellation.

6. Lock your pages.

In the dashboard, specify which URLs require a Tag to access. Visitors without the required tag are redirected to your sign-in page automatically.

7. Test, then publish.

Run through the sign-up, purchase, and cancellation flows in Stripe's test mode before going live. Once everything works, switch to live mode and publish.

For a detailed walkthrough of each step, the FrameAuth documentation → covers it comprehensively with screenshots.

The Teaser Model: The Smarter Way to Gate Content

The most important design decision in Artikle isn't visual, it's structural. Rather than blocking the entire article behind a hard paywall, Artikle uses a teaser model.

Free visitors see the article headline, author, category, and opening section. They understand what the publication is about, they can judge the writing quality, and they get genuinely engaged before hitting the upgrade prompt. Members see everything without interruption.

This approach consistently converts better than a blank "subscribe to read" wall because readers know what they're paying for. The value is demonstrated, not just claimed.

To build this in Framer with FrameAuth, you use a single component with two variants: a Default variant showing the full article content, and a Locked variant showing the teaser intro and subscribe CTA. The ToggleVariantIfWithTag override is applied to the component, which drives a Locked variable, when the visitor has the required tag the variable is No and the Default variant shows, when they don't it's Yes and the Locked variant shows. One component, one override, one variable, FrameAuth handles the rest automatically.

What You Can Build With FrameAuth V2

The template use cases go well beyond publications:

Membership publications: what Artikle demonstrates. A mix of free and gated articles, category pages, and an editorial homepage. The teaser model keeps it accessible and converts well.

Online courses: lock lesson pages behind a one-time purchase or subscription. FrameAuth even has a lesson completion tracking feature built in, so you can show progress through a course.

Digital product libraries: sell access to a collection of templates, UI kits, Figma files, or downloadable resources. One subscription, automatic access to everything.

Community portals: internal pages for teams, clients, or paid communities. Only approved members can enter.

Gated tools or dashboards: a public marketing landing page with a locked app section behind sign-up, creating a full product experience in Framer without any custom development.
